Tourists holding lanterns on a tour inside Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave, of course, is the star of the show in Mammoth Cave National Park, as it should be. The cave system is the largest in the world, with over 400 miles having been explored. It has a storied history that involves slavery, mining for saltpeter used in the production of gunpowder in two separate wars, as a tourist attraction, and now as a national park.

The National Park Service offers 17 different cave tours here, each with a special emphasis, including three that are lit only by lantern light.

The park also boasts a new lodge, featuring two restaurants and a coffee shop serving Starbucks products.

But there is so much more to do here! There are several surface hikes, biking, fishing, kayaking, camping, and horseback riding. The park is a certified International Dark Skies Park, where stargazing is popular. And there are special events throughout the year, such as Bat Night, and the Annual Christmas Cave Sing.
